Climbing roses need to be supported to grow strong. At the time of writing, they are still tiny plants (which were planted last November), now is the best time to create the structure that will allow them to grow and flourish for years to come.
As I wanted to do this once and only once, I decided to use the most durable materials. It is a larger time investment to put everything in place at the beginning, but it will save us time and money over time by removing the need for maintenance and not having to replace the whole structure. The following combination should last decades:
Wooden poles specially treated for outdoor resistance (pin traité autoclave classe 4): 70x70mm / 3m high
Galvanized steel supports for planting the poles into the ground: 71x71mm / 75cm deep
Stainless steel rods to fix the poles into the wall: 10 mm diameter
Stainless steel cables and accessories to guide the roses: 3mm thickness
1 - Setting the support in place
2 - Planting the post
3 - Drilling holes in the pole and in a strong stone
4 - Cleaning the stone
5 - Cutting the stainless steel rod to the right dimension
6 - Inserting chemical sealant
7 - Holding the pole in place while the sealant dries
8 - Fixing the pole in place and waiting until the sealant is dry
All the cables are prepared in advance. On one side, they are attached with a simple hook.
Adding the first side
On the other side, a tension mechanism is added
Adding the second side and tensioning
And now, let's wait for Spring and Summer and see who likes living here, and who needs help or adjustments.
